Rules

Be prepared to pay before stepping on to the ice at your first game.

Core Values:
WE PLAY FOR FUN.  We strive to have a highly competitive environment and have devised rules that promote, above all, team play and gentlemanly conduct.  Teams that keep this in mind will win the cup!  In the end the captains are the key.  Because we are pushing and that is part of the fun, it is possible for things to escalate.  Tell your captain when you think there is behavior that should be noted.  With just one ref per game, stuff will get missed.

It is tempting to take a little shot to slow down the opposition.  Remember:
  • We are not trying to win at all costs.
  • Many players have old and not so good equipment; some don’t even wear shoulder pads.
  • Realize a little hack on back of legs or ribs might make direct contact with the player.  Keep this in mind as the sting the opponent feels may be enough to start an escalation.  If we were playing with contact, we would all spend $1000’s on latest stuff that allows what goes on in midget/jr etc. to be tolerated.
  • It is these shots that the ref can’t see that create most of the issues.
  • Penalties happen, and that is part of the game.  What we won’t tolerate is the stuff the refs can’t see.  All of you see it and you are obliged to tell your captains.
  • Captains are well advised on how to deal with bad behavior.  For sure you will hear about it if you are causing a problem, so don’t.  Problems lead to escalations, which lead to suspensions.

Generalized Hockey Rules:
For the most part we follow same rules as the big leagues minus any hint of hacking. Here are unique differences that you need to become familiar with so that we are not questioning referees etc.
  • Icing is from the shooter’s side of his blue line, NOT shooter’s side of the center line.
  • On a penalty call the team with the power play coming up will have 10 seconds to have the centerman on the ice decide which faceoff circle in opposite end that the faceoff will be from.  If the ref has no response in 10 seconds, the ref will pick.
  • At the ref’s discretion, dangerous penalties like high sticking, slashing, hitting, if severe enough will be cause for the player go to the dressing room and you can expect at least one game suspension before coming back.
  • Unreasonable chirping at the ref will be cause for an ejection.
  • During a game, the two captains may also have a quick conversation that leads to an ejection or other actions.
  • No slapshots.  If you make a mistake, you bring the play back to your end for a face off.
  • Refs are pretty quick to call & whistle play down for 3 seconds in the crease and running the goalie is cause for a penalty or even a suspension.

Team make up
Each team has 12 skaters & 1 goalie.
Teams will be picked at the draft.
As usual Captains got together and you have been drafted to a team.  Great effort has gone into getting the right mix in each room as well as balancing talent so we have the most even play per game.  With best of intentions we realize some trades may be indicated.  Let’s be patient and play a few games.  Captains will get together and make trades to make the teams as even as possible at the trade deadline TBA.  Some players are really passionate about who they play with or which team colors they wear.  Others are not.  If you are the latter, please make your captain aware since trading someone who does not want to be traded is not so good for all.  We know there are enough players who don’t care which team that we can make effective adjustments.

Please think of your team mates and opponents.  Wash your sweaters.

Substitutions:
It is the captain’s responsibility to keep in touch with players informing and reminding of scheduled games as well as short notice changes that happen occasionally.  We find that any less than 10 players slows the game so captains are allowed to bring a sub in FROM THE LEAGUE or FROM THE APPROVED LIST OF PLAYERS  who are wanting to join MKHL next year.  When a captain knows in advance he is going to have an attendance problem, he should call up a player who is similar in abilities to who is being replaced.  This is not always possible.  DO NOT call up an A player.  There are very few of them in our league and adding one seems dishonorable when really, we just need a spot filled to balance a team number.  Captains are expected to manage expectations of a spare that is called up.  If two players show up last minute, it is bad management on the captain’s part and his call up may have to sit.  We ask all to register and hope that you use a cell phone as we find most captains now can easily manage a lot of stuff with emails and texts.

Substance abuse policy:
It has been observed that consumption of Alcohol and or Cannabis lead to some behavioral changes on ice that the league can’t tolerate.  Add to this that in a sport where injuries can happen, we want to minimize and it is known that intoxication creates problems for us.  So DON’T do it.  It is the captain's responsibility to stop players from stepping on the ice if they suspect any player is intoxicated.  Same as we would do if you had no helmet.  Use your head ☺
Captains will be suspended for 2 games if it is discovered they are covering for a player who is showing up not in a proper condition to play.

Exceptional disciplinary actions:
Captains will be feeding data to the DC after each game.  They have asked him to intervene on each disciplinary case.  In a perfect world the DC never changes anything that captains decide.  The DC will be making captains aware of trends and data that has been coming in.  The intent here is to help players to improve behavior so they can continue.  If they can’t the DC will make the call for suspensions or even removal from the league.  We strongly recommend that captains use the tools provided and do not get into bitching sessions after games.  Deliver the message to the offending player the next day and keep those communicatons private until action is concluded and accepted.  The DC will announce any of these situations in a fair and partial manner via email upon conclusion.  All players now understand the methods used.  If everyone understands what is expected, we expect to have a great season.

Suspensions & possible refunds:
Refunds for games not played can be requested by your captain on your behalf if you need to miss 3 or more games in a row due to injury.  If you have such a severe injury that you have to miss rest of season, a refund of value of balance of unplayed games less $50 can be accomodated.
MKHL is a great bunch of guys.  Sometimes we have a player that is just not going to work out for us.  In these cases, you will be offered a refund of the remaining games not played value less $100.  There will be no refunds for any reason short of injury after 31 Dec 2022.  Injury refunds after 31 Dec 2022 can not exceed $100.
